Workshop “Everyday Permaculture”, a part of the Benčić Youth Council project, was held on October 28th 2017 in the Urban garden Green Way in Rijeka. The theme of the October workshop was permaculture on which we worked together with the permaculturalist Sonja Katan.
“The name of permaculture is abbreviation of the words permanent and (agri)culture and represents the conscious design of not only the gardens, but all the elements necessary for life according to the principles of self-sustainability – from land cultivation to food, energy, shelters, materials and other intangible needs. Permaculture means harmonious integration of people and landscapes using locally available resources, but not invasively and exploitably, by closing the circle with nature through reproduction and redistribution of the surplus. This term also implies the inclusion of the social segment and the creation of a community i.e. the network of individuals and groups that spread permaculture solutions and principles. “(SAZ – Society of Architects of Zagreb).
The aim of the workshop was to present the permaculture to the children in a practical way, so they could understand its fundamental principles – People Care, Fair Share and Earth Care, and how they are intertwined.
At the workshop, children had the opportunity to get acquainted with the permaculture basics and the ways they can apply the permacultural principles in everyday life, which is why the workshop was called “Everyday Permaculture”. The workshop was held in the first Rijeka’s urban garden – Green Way, where members of the Kuraž Association, who are currently in charge of garden management, joined us.
During the one-day workshops, children were introduced to the urban garden. Then, through various games, together we learned about permaculture design and basic principles that must be applied during the design. The learned principles were then followed by making a lasagna flower bed, grain collection and exchange and by making hotels for insects.
In addition to working with land and plants, we have also discussed how permaculture expands to other life areas such as interpersonal relations, personal attitudes towards the environment, pollution, household management, and the like.
We enjoyed a wonderful view of our town with our hands in the dirt!
